Weekly Update #4: Music "Journalism" vs. Paramore, Robert Pattinson at #Sundance2018, but Kristen Stewart a No-Show?
I decided to try something different with the blog this week and do a wrap-up post for all the events that happened with Paramore, Rob and Kristen from January 19-26 (Sunday-Saturday). It's kind of like what some other fansites do, linking back to their own content, but I'm linking to content that I'm a fan of.

MENTIONS: Olivier Assayas on Kristen Stewart's "incredible pace and rhythm" in PERSONAL SHOPPER
PERSONAL SHOPPER director Olivier Assayas discussed Kristen Stewart's intense work on their second collaborative project. With Film Journal:
"She kind of popped up on the set forty-eight hours before the shoot," Assayas says by phone. "I had given her a screenplay that was 'finished' more or less, but we actually finished it on the set."
The director describes their work as a process of nonverbal communication, of operating on similar wavelengths. He praises Stewart's grasp of cinema, of "understanding what is going on within a shot. She brings such incredible pace and rhythm, she recreates the characters from inside, but at the same time she's guided by physicality, by the body."Assayas notes how Stewart can manipulate time within a shot, expanding or contracting scenes simply on the strength of her engagement in the moment. "She knows that she can try things," he says. "She knows that she can push things. I think when you have a bad relationship with actors, they won't be as daring because there's always the possibility that if they try something stupid, you won't be smart enough to edit it out. It's all about trust. I give her as much space and time as she needs within the shot and she gives me the risks she's taking. She gives me back the trust I give her.
Sounds like an amazing journey those two had had while filming. To read the whole interview, visit filmjournal.com."A lot of scenes or moments were very much shorter or slightly different in the screenplay. Every now and then Kristen would do something and I would turn to my continuity girl and ask her how long was this shot, and she would tell me like three minutes. And I would just freak out because I didn't realize it was that long. But I wasn't bored one second, I was discovering something new that Kristen was bringing."

MENTIONS: Kelly Reichardt Talks Working with Kristen Stewart with LITTLE WHITE LIES
Certain Women director Kelly Reichardt talks about working with Kristen Stewart on the film together with Little White Lies:
“Some friends of mine made a film with Kristen, Still Alice, so they gave the script [for Certain Women] to her. Her response was, ‘If it happens, let me know, and I’ll come do this’, but right up until the day she arrived on set, we were like, ‘Is Kristen Stewart really going to show up?’ And then there she was. It was like, ‘Oh hey, here you are.’”
“I had worked with Dakota Fanning and with Jesse Eisenberg [on 2014’s Night Moves] and they are two of her closest friends, so they put in a good word. I had had really fun experiences with both Dakota and Jesse, so I think because of that Kristen was game for it. But she was completely unperturbed by the size of the part. She’s not the lead. She plays a supporting part in the movie, and she made so much of that character.Visit lwlies.com to read the full interview.
“She let Lily Gladstone’s character set the pace and be the focus. She was so generous – a really generous actor, I thought. She helped give it some shape, because Lily’s a really different kind of actor, really intuitive and Kristen, likewise, is an intuitive actor, but she’s also been doing it a long time and she’s a technical actress. I thought that it played well in terms of who the two characters are. She had a barbecue for the crew on the day off and was just totally easy and not at all demanding.
“I loved her in The Runaways, that’s really what I loved Kristen in most. It’s an imperfect movie but all the women in it are really… I loved the real Runaways so I really did not want a movie of The Runaways, but she’s really good in it!”
It's so good to hear all the praise from the people who matter the most to her.

MENTIONS: Olivier Assayas on Kristen Stewart's "Realistic" Performance in PERSONAL SHOPPER
Olivier Assayas talked with Euronews about Kristen Stewart's Personal Shopper performance:
Video is dubbed in Spanish. Olivier talks in French.
A thriller, a psychological drama, a fantasy, a mix of genres. That is how the film ‘Personal Shopper’ has been described. The star is Kristen Stewart. It is the second successive time the American was cast by the director Olivier Assayas.
Stewart won a César Award for Best Supporting Actress in his 2014 film ‘Sils Maria’.
Olivier Assayas wrote and directed Personal Shopper. It has been described as “wreckless and audacious” while Kristen Stewart’s performance was hailed as ““tremendous”“.
“I wanted to tell the story of someone who is rebuilding their life, someone who after a bereavement is rebuilding and I feel like those painters who use the colours they need here and there. So I feel like making something of a collage by which I mean all the tools I use are good all the means are good to tell what I want to tell and to make the viewer feel what I want him or her to feel,” the director told euronews.
Stewart plays Maureen a personal shopper to a demanding German super model. She is also a medium who is trying to connect with her dead brother.
“This is someone who is alone and just a person available to communicate with about someone who is not there. That is her brother’s friend who lives and works in Oman and with whom she communicates through Skype. She does research on the internet that becomes an extension of our own memory or knowledge,” explained Olivier Assayas.
Much of the success of the film is down to Kristen Stewart’s performance.
“She inspires the film, and then I can tell it in a different way, but the reality is that she inspired this character, I think she also gave me the ability to do it, that is, I think I would not have ventured into a project, a story, that has to do with the fantastic, with the invisible, where there are somewhat abstract things that I had to handle.
And that, I would not have done it if I did not know that I had an actress who brings everything back to reality, someone incredibly realistic, physical, materialistic,” concluded the director.
At Cannes, Assayas shared the Best Director Award with Cristian Mungiu for his film Graduation.

MENTIONS: Olivier Assayas on Kristen Stewart: "She has an inner depth coupled with a spontaneity"

Kristen Stewart's Personal Shopper director mentioned her in an interview with Screendaily.
Starring Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart as a psychic young woman trying to connect with her dead twin brother in Paris, it was one of the most anticipated titles at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it played in competition.
It is the second time Assayas has worked with Stewart - after Clouds Of Sils Maria - and rumours abound about a potential third collaboration.
“For now there’s nothing in the pipeline,” Assayas told Screen. “Today, I don’t have a project to propose to her although I would love to have one. I don’t rule it out for the future.”
The director – who has worked with a roster of top actresses over his 30-year career including Juliette Binoche, Maggie Cheung and Chloe Sevigny – describes Stewart as “the best actress of her generation”.
“Kristen has an infinitely larger range than many actresses of her generation. She has an inner depth coupled with a spontaneity and naturalness that sets her apart. She also has an innate understanding of cinema that makes me believe she could succeed at directing too.”
Assayas wrote the screenplay for Personal Shopper to get over the frustration of the shelving in 2014 of his US-financed action thriller Idol’s Eye just as it was due to shoot in Toronto with Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro in the lead roles.
“I had to turn the page and move on. After a series of films set in the past such as Carlos, After May and Sils Maria, which was sort of out of time, I wanted to do something set in contemporary Paris, capturing the city today,” explained Assayas.
I hope that Olivier and Kristen work together again really soon. Also, I hope that Idol's Eye comes back to life; I'd love for Rob and Olivier to finally have that chance to work together, for real.

MENTIONS: Brady Corbet Talks Robert Pattinson and CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER with EYE FOR FILM

Robert Pattinson's director Brady Corbet had some nice words to say about him and his very professional work ethic in Childhood of a Leader. With Eye for Film:
Given that he feels so strongly about the mythology of fan culture, it’s ironic that he has cast Pattinson in the film, as the actor has built up an ardent following in the years since the Twilight films, with a large number of fan sites dedicated to his work and even the internet-friendly abbreviation RPatz. Corbet says he was interesting in using certain expectations to his advantage.
“It’s really bizarre,” says Corbet “There’s a couple of things. First of all, I’m not that connected to the notion of Rob as a celebrity, because I’ve known him for a long time and I didn’t discover him that way. The other thing is that I thought it would be really, really interesting to have this sort of Janet Leigh in Psycho effect, where you have someone who is a public figure and people have their eye on him, he’s interesting, he’s charismatic, he’s compelling, he’s handsome. And I thought, that it would really give weight to the first 20 minutes of the film. So I hired him for all of those reasons. I hired him because the role was written for a young man that was a bit younger than the female character, handsome and English, so I thought of him.
“Anyone who has spent any time with the guy will know that he’s super hard-working and he never complains. I was just talking to the Safdie brothers, who are directing a new film with him [Good Time], and Josh was like, ‘Dude, we were shooting 19 hour days and he didn’t fucking complain once.’ They were just amazed by his work ethic and so am I. I think he and I will work together for a long time.”
Corbet isn’t sure yet whether Pattinson will feature in his next film Vox Lux yet. “It’s a big cast and it’s an ensemble piece and I have to work out what age everyone is in relationship to each other,” he says, but the British star is working with Corbet’s wife and collaborator Mona Fastvold on her upcoming film The Bleaching Yard.
“It’s a period drama,” says Corbet “The source material is from a very famous Norwegian author called Tarjei Vesaas and she’s set it in a whaling community in the 1940s, which is not in the book. It’s really great. We’re making that with Chris Cohen who produced Childhood as well and her producers from The Sleepwalker. This is the first time as a family that we have made two separate projects.” [My emphasis]
He also says that compared to The Childhood Of A Leader, Vox Lux has been a must swifter project.
Hmm...very interesting hearing about Rob and another new maybe-project with Mona Fastvold. Hope to hear more soon.

MENTIONS: Zac Farro Talks Drumming with Paramore on Billboard

Paramore's former drummer and friend Zac Zarro talked with Billboard about recording drums with them for Album 5.
Was returning to Paramore, for now only as a drummer on the album, a huge step for him? “It’s a second chance,” he says. “I’m so thankful that I’m playing on the album, but that wasn’t what was important to me at the beginning. What was important was mending those friendships… Hayley and Taylor have become really good friends of mine again and they’re super supportive of my stuff. We’ve restored our friendship. Cleared the air.”
New HalfNoise album, Sudden Feeling is coming out on September 9th. Full postcast is available HERE. You can hear there Zac pointing out that Paramore is now only two people and even though Taylor is sometimes playing on the guitar in HalfNoise, Zac is more focused not only on his on projects but also on keeping good relations with Hayley and Taylor, not speficially getting back to Paramore. “There are just two of them now and it’s their album,” he says. “People will always associate me with Paramore because this is where I’ve spent the half of my life.”
Would he like to get back and play a couple of shows with them? “I have moments but I don’t know if that’s even an option. It would be fun. I kinda take every day as it comes.” So, maybe one day we will see Zac playing in Paramore again? “Who knows?,” says Zac.
Whether Zac returns to Paramore or not, I hope he kills the drums in Album 5! :)

Me too!
Millie Bobby Brown: Oh my God! I’m so glad you love her too.
She’s so grumpy and deadpan, it's hilarious. Ok, let’s not get sidetracked... What sort of movies are you into? Do you like all the 80s movies that the show is inspired by?
Millie Bobby Brown: Yes, for sure. I’m a bit of a movie buff, and I’m kinda into 80s stuff. I just love the hair and the whole look! I also love Twilight. And I’m obsessed with Jodie Foster. She was a child actress too. I always dreamed of her directing an episode of Stranger Things!

Zac Farro Confirms Recording with Paramore on Their Fifth Album
Zac Farro is back with Paramore! Just for the album, for now.
After much speculation, and pictures of eating in the studio, Zac Farro finally confirmed his involvement in Paramore's fifth studio album.
We've noticed it for awhile, but it's so nice to hear from the horse's mouth that Zac is back, but just for the album! He's not returning to the band officially. He told Idobi:
No one’s really asked cause I’ve kind of deterred the question, but I’m doing HalfNoise – that’s my band. They’ve asked me to drum, and it was like, ‘Yeah, of course!’ We’ve always been friends, and yeah, there was a little bit of weirdness cause I left the band for a few years, but all that stuff is not even there anymore and there’s no hard feelings and it’s just been rad and fun.”

MENTIONS: Jamie King: "Robert Pattinson "Wanted to Take FKA Twigs to Anything" Dance-Related
Actress and model Jamie King mentioned meeting Robert Pattinson and how he wanted to do something dance-related for his girl FKA Twigs:
Excerpt from Everything you need to know about the dance world, according to Jaime King
3. Her new gig as a choreographer
King recently organized The Final Chapter, an evening of dance and interactive poetry that took place in LA. “I was talking to Rob Pattinson right when he first started dating [FKA] Twigs, and he wanted to take her to anything that had to do with dance,” she recalls. “I was trying to find something for him and I realized we in Los Angeles have very little live performance art. So I said, if other people aren’t making it happen, I want to make it happen.”
King chose the music and co-choreographed the performances with 18-year-old dancer Haley Messick; the evening was, naturally, a hit. “I intend to continue to move into this dance space and bring more of it into Los Angeles,” she says eagerly.
Awww that's so sweet! Rob always has to do something for his girl! ♥

CAFE SOCIETY Director Woody Allen Sits with France2 + NEW Still of Kristen Stewart

French channel 2 talked with Cafe Society director Woody Allen about opening his new film at Cannes Film Festival this year, featuring a new still of Kristen Stewart's Vonnie character.
_______________
"In a sense it's my usual, romanticise view of New York and its life in late 30s - and how difficult life and love are or were even then, and haven't changed much now. It was a difficult sentence to say."
"I spent a whole year with people like Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively.. beautiful women.. talented men like Jesse Eisenberg for exemple.. And I worked with costumers and I worked with cinematographers and I escaped into the movies, I don't think about life, my whole life is all fantasy. From wen I was a little boy going to the movies to a grown up making movies."

THR: You had to reshoot part of Cafe Society. What happened?
I shot a few scenes in California with Bruce Willis, and Bruce was going to do something on Broadway [Misery] and it was just too much for him. So we replaced him with Steve Carell.
How did the movie come about?
I wanted to do kind of a novel on film, about a family and the relationships of the members toward one another, and the protagonist's love relationship. I wanted it to have the structure of a novel, so I could move around and dwell on various members of the family. That's why I narrated it because I was sort of the writer of the novel that you were experiencing when you saw the film.
Was the agent played by Carell based on anyone specific?
Yes and no. When I first started in the business, I was 16, 17, and I would go up to agents' offices. And these agents were very powerful figures to me. I remember going out to California once, going to William Morris, and there was a very beautiful receptionist there. And I thought, "My God, she's as beautiful as any of the movie stars."
What kind of things did you read for research to make the movie?
Well, you read the [old] gossip columns, the Hollywood columns, [which] were in New York as well. So much of what you knew from California, you knew from the columns that you got in New York — Hedda Hopper and Sheilah Graham. They would give you the Hollywood news, and it sounded very exciting.
This is your 12th film in Cannes.
It could be. I don't know. For years, I would send the film and not go. I don't know [why]. I never liked to fly on an airplane for six hours and get the time change. It makes me crazy; it takes me six months to get [over the time change]. Just from daylight saving time, I can't recover. So then I started to go, and my wife likes to go, she enjoys the South of France. I mean, I like the South of France, too. It's a film-oriented event, and so it's enjoyable.

MENTIONS: EQUALS Director Drake Doremus Talks Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult's "Unhinged Moments" in the Film
Kristen Stewart's Equals director Drake Doremus discussed her and her co-star Nicholas Hoult's work in the sci-fi/romantic dystopian film with No Film School and Tribeca Short List. He discussed at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival:
Doremus: That's probably my favorite scene in the movie. Kristen and Nicholas hadn't really touched at any point up to that scene. So it was an unhinged moment. We'd just do long 30-minute takes. I played music the entire time. That created a very cool tone and vibe—the music that's in the film. We talked about the scene a lot, and then I just kind of let them go.
I'm more interested in watching what the actors do, and then changing things and guiding things, rather than telling them what to do. I'm more interested in not clouding their mind with all the things they have to remember to do. It's about getting them not to think, and be completely out of body and to not try to do anything but just be in the moment, react, and respond genuinely to what's going on.
NFS: What kind of simple things? Movements?
Doremus: For instance, for Nick: what does Kristen smell like in the scene? What's going on with her eyebrows? Just focusing on little elements essentially will change him, and change how he reacts. Just getting them to focus on other things that are not themselves, either. Trying to get them to focus on each other as much as possible, to bring something out of each other.
__________________________
Doremus: Nic is somebody I always wanted to work with, and we really essentially wrote Silas [his character] for him. He was really the only actor I ever wanted for the role. I met him about four and a half years ago, and that was the beginning of our relationship. Kristen and I met and it was super fascinating… [during the shoot] she let me push her for the character. Nobody’s harder on her than herself. She cares so much and she’s so passionate about her work. They have really amazing chemistry and it was really awesome to see them on set everyday.
Drake always has such kind things to say about Kristen and Nick. Sweet!

MENTIONS: Cherie Currie Describes Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as "realistic and remarkable" in 'Runways' Biopic

The Runaways mogul Cherie Currie talked about Dakota Fanning's portrayal of her, as well as Kristen Stewart's portrayal of Joan Jett in the 2010 punk rock biopic. She discussed with Spotlight Report:
CC: Wow. Well, you know what? I will say, more than watching the film for the first time, when Joan and I were on the set for when they did that scene which was to be taking place in Japan, Joan and I literally had tears running down our faces, because we’d finally got to see what everybody else had seen. It was like we were watching The Runaways. That was a moment I’ll never forget, because that’s how realistic Dakota and Kristen were playing us. And it was remarkable seeing the movie. Well, I saw it with my family for the first time and you know, it was a little weird, especially when it came to the more sexualised parts. My son’s sitting next to me, you understand. But I will say that Dakota’s always been one of my favourite actors of all time. So when she signed on to do this film…I’m still in shock that she did it. And Kristen – of course, she was fantastic. And Michael Shannon was fantastic. It was just such a great cast and Floria Sigismondi really captured the seventies in such a unique way. It just seemed to take us back.
Such kind words from the legend herself! Kristen and Dakota did such a great job in that movie.

MENTIONS: Susan Sarandon Thinks Kristen Stewart is "using her career instead of being used by it"

Legendary actress Susan Sarandon mentioned Kristen Stewart today with Harper's Bazzar:
Today I think there is a crop of young women who are interested in having fun and having lives but are not necessarily trying to please all the time—even though they are scrutinized constantly. The Melissa McCarthys, the Amy Poehlers, all of those gals who are creating work, being funny and independent. You don't always have to be about liberation. Then there's Shailene Woodley and Ellen Page and Brie Larson—they seem to be creating a life. Kristen Stewart. Saoirse Ronan. These women are using their careers instead of being used by them.
It's amazing how the legends encourage our new generation of actors to be themselves and create a life instead of having the limelight create one for them.
