A thriller, a psychological drama, a fantasy, a mix of genres. That is how the film ‘Personal Shopper’ has been described. The star is Kristen Stewart. It is the second successive time the American was cast by the director Olivier Assayas.

Stewart won a César Award for Best Supporting Actress in his 2014 film ‘Sils Maria’.

Olivier Assayas wrote and directed Personal Shopper. It has been described as “wreckless and audacious” while Kristen Stewart’s performance was hailed as ““tremendous”“.

“I wanted to tell the story of someone who is rebuilding their life, someone who after a bereavement is rebuilding and I feel like those painters who use the colours they need here and there. So I feel like making something of a collage by which I mean all the tools I use are good all the means are good to tell what I want to tell and to make the viewer feel what I want him or her to feel,” the director told euronews.

Stewart plays Maureen a personal shopper to a demanding German super model. She is also a medium who is trying to connect with her dead brother.

“This is someone who is alone and just a person available to communicate with about someone who is not there. That is her brother’s friend who lives and works in Oman and with whom she communicates through Skype. She does research on the internet that becomes an extension of our own memory or knowledge,” explained Olivier Assayas.

Much of the success of the film is down to Kristen Stewart’s performance.

“She inspires the film, and then I can tell it in a different way, but the reality is that she inspired this character, I think she also gave me the ability to do it, that is, I think I would not have ventured into a project, a story, that has to do with the fantastic, with the invisible, where there are somewhat abstract things that I had to handle.

And that, I would not have done it if I did not know that I had an actress who brings everything back to reality, someone incredibly realistic, physical, materialistic,” concluded the director.


At Cannes, Assayas shared the Best Director Award with Cristian Mungiu for his film Graduation.

Kristen Stewart's Personal Shopper director mentioned her in an interview with Screendaily.

French director Olivier Assayas will touch down at Zurich Film Festival (Sept 22 - Oct 2) this year to receive the event’s tribute award and present his metaphysical thriller Personal Shopper, which is screening as part of a retrospective of his works.

Starring Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart as a psychic young woman trying to connect with her dead twin brother in Paris, it was one of the most anticipated titles at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it played in competition.

It is the second time Assayas has worked with Stewart - after Clouds Of Sils Maria - and rumours abound about a potential third collaboration.

“For now there’s nothing in the pipeline,” Assayas told Screen. “Today, I don’t have a project to propose to her although I would love to have one. I don’t rule it out for the future.”

The director – who has worked with a roster of top actresses over his 30-year career including Juliette Binoche, Maggie Cheung and Chloe Sevigny – describes Stewart as “the best actress of her generation”.

“Kristen has an infinitely larger range than many actresses of her generation. She has an inner depth coupled with a spontaneity and naturalness that sets her apart. She also has an innate understanding of cinema that makes me believe she could succeed at directing too.”

Assayas wrote the screenplay for Personal Shopper to get over the frustration of the shelving in 2014 of his US-financed action thriller Idol’s Eye just as it was due to shoot in Toronto with Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro in the lead roles.


“I had to turn the page and move on. After a series of films set in the past such as Carlos, After May and Sils Maria, which was sort of out of time, I wanted to do something set in contemporary Paris, capturing the city today,” explained Assayas.

I hope that Olivier and Kristen work together again really soon. Also, I hope that Idol's Eye comes back to life; I'd love for Rob and Olivier to finally have that chance to work together, for real.

Kristen Stewart Wins Best Supporting Actress at the 2016 Skandies Critics Poll

Kristen Stewart won the 'Best Supporting Actress' award at the 2016 Skandies Critics Poll for Clouds of Sils Maria. Indiewire writes:

The inevitable result of any critics poll is conventional wisdom. By their nature, polls rule out individual eccentricities in favor of broad-based appeal: They tell you what everyone likes, which is why after a while, they all start to look the same. But The Skandies are different. The annual survey administered by A.V. Yay Kristen Stewart has won another Best Supporting Actress award for Clouds of Sils Maria at the Alliance of Women Film Journalists' EDA Awards!! 

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists, Inc. (AWFJ), was founded in 2006 by Jennifer Merin, Maitland McDonagh, Joanna Langfield and Jenny Halper. We were incorporated as a not-for-profit charitable organization in New York State in October, 2006.

Our members are highly qualified professional female movie critics, reporters and feature writers working in print, broadcast and online media. Members are required to meet AWFJ membership criteria.

Our purpose is to support work by and about women – both in front of and behind the cameras – through intra-group promotional activities, outreach programs and by presenting the annual EDA Awards in recognition of outstanding accomplishments (the best and worst) by and about women in the movies.

Kristen Stewart's NEW INTERVIEW with Vanity Fair: "I can't wait to direct."

Kristen Stewart got together with Vanity Fair to discuss filming with Olivier Assayas on Personal Shopper, why she doesn't like to rehearse before shooting, how she feels about the next generation of actresses joining big franchises. She also talked about her aspirations to direct her own film someday. Read below:

Kristen Stewart has what she calls “dropped on my ass” syndrome. Returning to Los Angeles just before Christmas after a “a long week of work,” she’s still recovering from a shoot with Olivier Assayas—not Clouds of Sils Maria, the film for which she won France’s César Award and is a best-supporting-actress Oscar hopeful, but Personal Shopper, a new film that Stewart calls a “thoughtful, really meditative ghost story.”

And, not for nothing, maybe the hardest movie she’s ever made. “I genuinely felt closer to death on a movie than I’ve ever felt,” Stewart says. “It’s like 16-hour days, six days a week, running my fucking ass around Paris. Literally nonstop running.” And the film, now in post-production, isn’t easy on the mind, either. “[Assayas] sort of gave me this opportunity for a short period of time to contemplate infinity in a really disarming and scary way, that’s like little questions that you ignore when you lay your head down on your pillow at night. Like, ‘I'm alone, who am I?’ All those things, they plague her.”

In short, don’t expect Clouds of Sils Maria to be the last time Stewart gets a lot of attention for a film she made with Olivier Assayas. Though she’s been acting since she was a child, and pals with the likes of Julianne Moore since she was 12, Stewart may have never had a breakthrough year quite like 2015, in which she won accolades for Sils Maria that seemed to finally shake any sense of surprise that the girl from Twilight was really, really talented. Stewart’s overwhelmed acceptance speech at the César Awards was repeated in a way at this week’s New York Film Critics Circle Awards, where she ended with a quick, nervous-seeming, but charming “bye!”—suggesting that the dazzle of this kind of recognition hasn’t quite worn off.

Nor has the dazzle of Juliette Binoche, her Sils Maria co-star with whom she formed a bond while Assayas kept his distance on the set. “As emotionally engaged as he is, trying to get thoughts or impressions is like pulling teeth,” Stewart says of the director. “All the intimacy happened between the two of us when we would talk about our interactions with Olivier fondly and with this sort of admiration and actual love.”

Stewart calls Binoche a “serious force to be reckoned with,” and someone she admires even while recognizing their utterly different styles. “I’m so impressionable and sensitive and touchy and she’s locked and loaded and ready to go at all times,” Stewart says. “Whereas I think that’s different upbringing when it comes to how we approach our work: she’s a fucking trained, crafted, experienced vet, and I’m a little bit less that. I’m much more accidental.”

And their work would often imitate the film, in which Stewart play the personal assistant to Binoche’s actress character, and often helps her rehearse lines for an upcoming play. “She would always try and run lines and I would run away from her on set,” Stewart admits. “I'd be like I can’t. I don’t want to say those things yet. . . . I hate rehearsing. It feels strange.”

Real life also creeps into the margins of Sils Maria with the introduction of a character played by Chloë Grace Moretz, a rising American starlet who’s currently acting in a large franchise—not unlike Twilight or Moretz’s own upcoming blockbuster The 5th Wave. Large franchises weren’t often a stepping stone for up-and-coming actresses until Stewart and Twilight hit so big, and she’s aware of the trend she’s started. “It’s weird having done this overtly successful franchise-type thing, and then have a bunch of young girls hop on similar vehicles and be like, ‘Hey, how’s that going for you?’ [They’re] really interesting, talented girls, and that’s why they were hired for these jobs, because they were really cool in that moment and they didn’t know what to expect and they jumped on. Basically, I’m just waiting for those things to be over. I’m definitely interested in what Chloë does in between and on her big projects.”

As for Stewart, her next big project—once she recovers from the near-death experience of Personal Shopper, at least—could well be one she directs herself. “Oh yeah, I’m gunning,” Stewart says when asked if she’d like to direct her own work. “I really want that now.” She’s willing to wait for the time and material to be right, but she’s got the skills ready for when the moment comes. “I think that I’d be pretty good at getting people on the same plane and on the sort of train,” she says. “Yeah. I can’t fucking wait.”
