The time has come! Many news outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and the Playlist have announced that Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and British newcomer Ella Balinska are set to star in the new Charlie's Angels reboot, with Elizabeth Banks directing.
We've already heard rumors and ups-and-downs with the casting. Earlier this month, some outlets presented the idea of Lupita Nyong'o first being cast. However, it looks like Elle has taken her place in the official announcement. It's a bit disappointing that Lupita won't be starring with the other fabulous ladies, but there will be other chances.
As for Kristen, it's been a minute since we've seen her in a big-budget action film since Snow White and the Hunstman in 2012, and even later with the sleeper comedy American Ultra in 2015. So it's awesome that this is the next step into her career as an actor.
The Hollywood Reporter:
The new story takes the detective agency premise of the original television series and turn-of-the century movies and takes it global, with the Townsend Agency now a worldwide security and intelligence service that has teams around the planet. The movie will focus on one of those teams and the next generation of Angels.
“Charlie’s Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the ’70s,” said Banks in a statement. “This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”
The rumors have finally been quashed. Kristen Stewart and Naomi Scott are officially confirmed to star in Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot, with newcomer British actress Ella Balinska completing the crime-fighting trio. Banks is pulling double duty on the Sony Pictures pic, serving as the film’s director and playing Bosley.
Jay Basu and Banks penned the script based on earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas. The pic will now be released September 27, 2019, moving from its original June 7 date.
The film will follow a new next generation of Angels working for the mysterious Charlie. Since the original films (starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu) based on the 1970s TV series, The Townsend Agency has grown considerably and gone global, providing security and intelligence services to a variety of private clients with offices and highly trained teams worldwide. This film focuses on one of those teams.
This film marks Stewart’s return to big-budget studio film, as the actress has mostly appeared in indie films since the end of The Twilight Saga. Her upcoming slate includes JT Leroy, Lizzie Borden biopic, Lizzie, and Against All Enemies.
As mentioned, Banks is intimately involved in the production of the film, serving as co-writer, director, and star. “’Charlie’s Angels,’ for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the ’70s,” Banks said. “This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”
Stewart is probably best known to the masses as the star of the “Twilight” franchise, however, if you’re a reader of The Playlist, you probably know her from the variety of amazing roles she’s taken since then, winning awards for her recent performances in “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Personal Shopper.” She has been a film festival darling recently but is now going back to the world of big-budget filmmaking.
She is joined by Naomi Scott, who is a star on the rise, seen most recently in the “Power Rangers” reboot film as the Pink Ranger, but will probably have a much bigger impact as Jasmine in the upcoming live-action “Aladdin” for Disney. Balinska, on the other hand, hasn’t really had her chance at big-budget films. She’s probably best known in her native England in series like “Casualty” and “Midsomer Murders.” “Charlie’s Angels” will no doubt be her biggest work to date.
“Charlie’s Angels” is scheduled to be released September 27, 2019.
