Stylist Tara Swennen talks about designing her buddy and client Kristen Stewart's outfits with The Hollywood Reporter:

What is your favorite ensemble that you've styled where the shoes and clothes just all came together?

Tara: I put Kristen Stewart in a checkered brown and cream Louis Vuitton romper for an event in Japan where the shoe was going to be one of the most important elements of the outfit. We managed to find the perfect Brian Atwood gladiator type heel to pair with it. It had amazing buckles and the brown leather cross crossing matched perfectly. They were sexy and feminine with a little bit of edge — the perfect shoe for Kristen.

What are your personal favorite pair of shoes of all time?

Tara Swennen: My favorite pair of shoes of all time are a pair of simple black pumps given to me as a Christmas gift from Jimmy Choo. They are black leather with a three-inch heel and an interesting cut-out detail on the top of the toes, and are probably the most comfortable shoes of all time. They are simple and chic and I literally have worn them down to a nub.

What makes a great red-carpet stiletto?

I think it depends on the person as well as the outfit. Comfort is usually key for most of my clients as they have to wear them for hours on end, but shoes are one of the greatest statement makers so most women are willing to fight through the pain if it's worth it for the look. To me, a great stiletto needs to give that beautiful lift and shape to a woman's leg so the arch and heel height are very important to me. Kurt Geiger, Christian Louboutin, and Giuseppe Zanotti are making great stilettos at the moment.

How many pairs of shoes would we see in your shoe closet right now?

I probably have close to 50 pairs of shoes in my closet. I organize them by color and then by shoe type — boots, flats, heels. I think it's a tie between Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin.

What are your favorite shoes for when you are working?

On a daily basis while working you will see me and a pair of Converse Chucks or Jack Purcells. I am a simple jeans and T-shirt kind of a girl during the day, and I need to be comfortable while pulling or shooting for 12 hours straight. I gravitate towards white and I simply love them!

What is your opinion on the trend of the block-heeled pump?

I am a fan of the block-heeled pumps. I think when worn right they can be very sexy, but they are not for everybody. I tend to love a chunky heel more in a boot but quite a few designers from Fendi and Balenciaga to ASOS have managed to perfect the look!

And lastly, what shoes do you think will dominate the red carpet this awards season?

I think platforms will always prevail due to the fact that they add much needed height under gowns. But strappy simple heels like the Stuart Weitzman Nudist will also trend. Satin is always the most popular fabric but modern metallics will also come into play as well!

On a Tuesday in mid-August, movie star Kristen Stewart was in New York City promoting her latest project, an action-comedy called American Ultra. She was a guest on "LIVE with Kelly and Michael" in the morning, appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" at night, and flew back to Los Angeles at the end of the day. Her near-constant companion throughout that media whirlwind: Tara Swennen '01, her stylist for more than a decade.

Thirty-six-year-old Swennen has made a name for herself dressing an A-list roster of clients in her signature style, creating looks that are classic and elegant, but with a creative twist. In addition to Stewart—best known as Bella Swan from the Twilight movies—they include "Modern Family" star Julie Bowen, Kaley Cuoco of "The Big Bang Theory," and Emily Ratajkowski of Gone Girl and the "Blurred Lines" music video. "It's been lovely working with Kristen through her younger, teenage years and watching her blossom into a woman," says Swennen, who notes that Stewart is now the face of high-profile fashion brands Balenciaga and Chanel. "I've been able to have a lot of influence on her look, and we've done a lot of fun things together. It's a true collaboration."

For the New York outing, Swennen outfitted Stewart in a simple Thierry Mugler sheath on "LIVE" and a black Diane von Furstenberg romper on "Fallon." But she added her trademark visual appeal with unexpected color combinations—like the dress's mint and coral fabric—and edgy accessories such as the choker and strappy heels she paired with the romper.

Celebrity stylist Tara Swennen talked about Kristen Stewart's first time at Paris Fashion Week in 2013 with The Thick. 

In the summer of 2013, I went to Paris with Kristen Stewart to attend Haute Couture Fashion Week for the first time. 

We went [as guests] of Chanel, and it was lovely. Kristen and I had been working together for several years at that point, so it was really more like a family vacation. We stayed at Le Meurice, across the street from the Jardin des Tuileries. 

The trip was jam packed with dinners, drinks, and events. 

Kristen and I went to two shows together: Zuhair Murad, which was small — only two rows — and Chanel, which was on a much grander scale. 

That show was at the Grand Palais, and it was a sweltering 105 degrees, so everyone was sweating in their Chanel looks. 

Kristen wore the classic tweed blazer, which we mixed up with some leather gloves and cut-offs. She got a LOT of attention. 

This was before she starred in the Chanel campaigns; by the time we returned the following year, Kristen was the face of the brand.

Kristen Stewart's Stylist Explains Her Love Affair With Laid-Back Suiting

It started with her "sexy James Dean" hair.

It's not secret that Kristen Stewart's post-"Twilight" no f--ks given vibe has freed the actress to fully

 embrace her style, and we here at Fashionista are digging it. In just the past month, she has been 

making the rounds promoting her new film "Still Alice" wearing masculine-inspired suits almost 

exclusively and every look has been on-point. 

Stewart's stylist Tara Swennen says the reason for the fresh new style is two-fold: New York's winter 

weather and her new cropped hair. "It's the perfect opportunity for me as stylist to approach a 

new angle that maybe we haven't hit," she says about the shorter hair. "That's why I thought the 

suiting was kind of cool for her. To me she sort of oozes that sexy James Dean kind of look right

 now. That's sort of where I was going."

Stewart has had cropped hair before (it started back when she filmed the Joan Jett biopic in 2010 and 

has been existing in different variations every since), but Swennen says this time is different. "It 

wasn't as sleek, it has grown out a little bit now and it's very sophisticated. But, you know, 

Kristen loves a pantsuit and so anytime we can do a pant, a jumpsuit, that type of thing -- we 

like to throw it in, and especially the New York weather was a great opportunity to do that."

Her "Today Show" outfit, pictured above, was perhaps the most striking of Stewart's recent looks, 

pairing sweatpants with an oversize collared shirt from the brand Atea Oceanie. "I personally had 

seen Kate Hudson in one of their suit sets and just sort of died and loved it so much and 

thought, 'That is the perfect brand for Kristen,'" said Swennen. "They have this great crisp 

boyfriend shirt button-up that was very, very oversized and we had to take it in to make it nice

 for TV, obviously. But I loved pairing it with sweats -- again, because I was thinking about the 

cold weather and Kristen and I are very comfort-oriented people. It was just something that 

she'd never really done before."

The same promo-packed day saw Stewart change into another suit for "Late Night with Seth Meyers"

 from the Paris-based brand Sandro, pictured above. "I've looked for a lot of suiting with her, but 

she's such a tiny, tiny person that this particular brand just fits her flawlessly," explains 

Swennen. "She's a big fan of A.L.C. and Jonathan Simkhai because they have sort of scuba 

tops 

that fit really well on her petite frame. So instead of pairing it with a collared shirt or a loose t-

shirt, we went with a tighter fit this time." Swennen also noted that both suits complement the 

chunky locket necklace Stewart has been wearing, which was made for her by her makeup artist 

Jillian Dempsey. 

And even when Stewart has to wear heels and a dress -- as she did to the New York premiere of "Still

 Alice," -- she and Swennen are still exploring new designers."She'd never worn Roksanda 

before," says Swennen. "I had the dress at another fitting and I was in love with it, but it just 

never got tried on. So I called it back in and it was just one of those things where the moment 

she zipped it on, it literally just fit perfectly. It was flawless, I thought it was fabulous."

Despite her famous resistance to heels, Swennen says her long-time client knows when she has to 

ditch the sneakers. "I don't mind, after a decade at this point it's a given, I don't even balk at 

[her preference for sneakers]," she says, laughing. "But she knows when I would love her to 

wear the heel, she does it."And as for this new chapter in Stewart's red carpet aesthetic? Swennen 

says it's not strategic. "She's really comfortable with all this stuff. The beauty of her is that she 

really is a chameleon -- she'll go from wearing dresses to suits and as long as she can wear 

sneakers with it, she's good."

“You try to make it a thematic story, again, incorporating the personal taste of each client. What they want to represent,” Swennen said.

“I remember with Kristen Stewart‘s first ‘Twilight’ tour we loved the idea of matching the colors on the book cover –the red, white and black vampire theme. I don't go that literal for the most part but she was young, we were having fun.”

Fun feels a big part of the process, which is a relief. Her workspace is devoid of cliches like trite catchphrases and oversized travel coffees. Massive frames contain polaroids of fittings throughout Tara's career — faces like Kim Kardashian, Sarah Michelle Gellar and a very animated Stewart make it easy to see clients have a ball with Swennen.

 You’ve put Kristen Stewart in sneakers on the red carpet. Was this her idea or yours? And how did you feel about the look as a whole?

Originally, the appearance of Kristen’s sneakers on carpets came from a place of necessity. She was constantly getting hurt on set, as she loves to do her own stunts, but she truly is an everyday T-shirt-and-jeans girl like myself. So we embraced it and it became part of her look.

Q: Speaking of the red carpet, you've styled celebrities like Kristen Stewart and Kaley Cuoco. Each of their looks definitely stands on its own, but which is your big, 'Wow, I can't believe I made that happen' moment?"

"I don't know if there's one in particular that stands out. I have to say I've been really lucky and have had some great moments with my girls on the carpet. One of the greatest honors I've had in my career was last year when Kristen was named one of the top 10 most fashionable celebs in Vogue. That grouping of her looks from 2013 — that was a really great honor. Getting a nod from Anna Wintour is always an amazing thing. That in and of itself was probably one of my prouder moments. But, I don't know if I can pick one look.

When it came time for the red carpet at last night’s Met Gala, we had a list of people we couldn’t wait to see—and Kristen Stewart was definitely one of them. The 23-year-old starlet turned up (sadly without Robert Pattinson) in a glamorous red jumpsuit by Stella McCartney, and was instantly one of the night’s standout stars.
Naturally, we had to consult her longtime stylist, Tara Swennen—who also dressed Teresa Palmer in Diane von Furstenberg for the big night—to get the full scoop. Swennen and K-Stew have worked together since the actress was 14 years old, so it’s no surprise that she has some great insight into the A-lister’s much-discussed sense of style.

Below, Swennen dishes on what it takes to style such a major event, as well as Stewart’s fashion evolution, and the one trend the “Twilight” actress refuses to try.

StyleCaster: The Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night. How is prepping for the red carpet different than others?Tara Swennen: For both Kristen Stewart and Teresa Palmer, we started about a month out by figuring out who they were going with. We loved the idea of Stella McCartney for Kristen because she hasn’t gone with a girl before, so we were having our girl power moment. Teresa went with Diane von Furstenberg which was an organic fit as well. I never thought both of my girls would end up in red lace for a punk themed gala!

With Kristen, we went over the sketches via email—and it was unanimous decision that we really liked the jumpsuit. Stella had given us the option of doing it in black or green and the cranberry red color that we ended up going with. Kristen went back and forth between the red and the green—and we just decided we loved it. Her hair is a little bit reddish right now, so we thought it would complement it well.

With Kristen we did our fitting via Skype with Stella. So it was really fun to do that—and they’re good friends and have met before in London, so that was really nice. That was just to make sure every nip and tuck was done properly. She had a representative from L.A. and a tailor we both used.

How did the theme and celebration of the “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit impact your styling?The main thing for me is that the girls feel comfortable and in their element. With Kristen, the theme was perfect for her, that’s why we thought the pant was kind of cool and different from a gown. The pantsuit was definitely her interpretation of punk. I knew a lot of would be hair and makeup, since Kristen doesn’t accessorize that much, so it had to be in the outfit as well as the beauty. Kristen doesn’t have her ears pierced or anything so I tried to add a studded heel for a little bit of a punk edge.

Given her love of Converse, a lot of people expected her to wear them last night given the theme. Did you guys discuss doing that?

No! You would’ve thought it would have happened. That’s why I love her! Every time you think she’s going to do something, she switches it up. It was more than punk glam.

How have you seen Kristen’s style evolve—on and off the red carpet?

Off the red carpet, that girl is tried and true when it comes to her look. She loves being in T-shirts and jeans and Converse and she’s been doing that since she was 14. I’m so happy she goes for it on the red carpet, but her true style on a day-to-day basis has stayed exactly the same and I love that about her. She doesn’t feel the need to follow trends.

As far as on the red carpet, I started with her when she was 14, she’s become a woman since I’ve known her and really come into her own. She’s more and more courageous and takes risks every year. I was blown away at the last “Breaking Dawn” press tour when she let me do all this sheer stuff and was okay wearing very risky pieces. I think she’s really coming into her own with her fashion. I love her because she’s so tried and true—she knows what she likes. There are certain things she will not do—I respect that she has things she knows about herself and she knows to stick what works.
What won’t Kristen wear?Last season, it was so funny because they called us out in The New York Times [that] Kristen had sort of hit every trend last year except for peplum! She’s not a fan of peplum. I tried with 20 peplum dresses this year, and it was not happening! I’m trying to get her to the high-neck turtleneck thing. I’m trying to push her.

How do you and Kristen feel about last night’s Met Gala look compared to past years?

I think out of the four times she’s gone, this has been my favorite look—but that’s not to say the others weren’t far behind. The Balenciaga last year had a punk element too—she loved that one as well. I love the dress the Proenza Schouler boys made for her in 2011. I think it was just really fun this year with her collaborating with a girl because it’s been boys the whole time. She was very involved, which was great, so I think she really enjoyed that. She loved the  idea of slipping her hand in her pocket! She could be part of the design process.
